We woke up early and got ready to hit the road. Our Air BnB host showed us where there was a fire back in March and how it came within 10 feet of her house. It was cool and thankfully her house and many other nearby structures were not damaged. Just when we were about to leave we saw parrots waiting by the door. They were brightly colored and it was surprising to see tropical looking birds in the cold.
Our first stop was at Mimosa Rocks National Park. While driving down the small dirt road we saw a big kangaroo watching us. We continued to the Mimosa Rocks lookout and boardwalk. The rocks are called Mimosa after a captain who crashed his boat on the rocks. They actually still have signs up warning about the environmental damage of the oil which is surprising since it crashed over 100 years ago in 1863. We took a hike to two small rocky beaches. It was sunny and windy but such a nice day. The ocean is beautiful!
Next we drove to Tilba Tilba. A small gold rush era town that is a national trust village. We stopped at their ABC Cheese Factory that made delicious cheeses and also sold local honeys. We got to sample different kinds of cheese and honey and we bought a trilogy pack that had 3 types in one. There was garlic olive, vintage, and firecracker falvours. We also bought a garlic cream cheese. All were extremely delicious and I wish I could go back and get more. Next we stopped at the local bakery. Hunter got a cream eclair and I got a cream donut. They were so fresh and flavourful.
After stopping for lunch we headed towards Narooma. Here we stopped for gas and took a small walk to the Australian Rock. It’s called the Australian Rock because it’s shaped like Australia.
We continued driving and stopped at McKenzie Beach. We had a bit of a rest and walked on the beach. We then went into the town of Bateman's Bay and stopped at the Boat Shed, a fish and chips place because surprisingly I was craving fish (I normally do not like fish and chips). We had a piece of flake and albacore, two calamari rings and two potato scallops. While eating we also saw more pelicans.
Our last stretch before we called it a night led us to the outskirts of Canberra, the capital of Australia. The drive lead us high up into the mountains with more twisty roads. It would have been fun to have the little Golf GTI on them.
